The purposes of nutrition services are:
-
To reduce hunger and food insecurity;
-
To promote socialization of older individuals; and
-
To promote the health and well being of older individuals in assisting such individuals to gain access to nutrition and other disease prevention and health promotion services to delay the onset of adverse health conditions resulting from poor nutritional health or sedentary behavior.
Nutrition services include congregate and home-delivered meals, nutrition screening, nutrition education, nutrition counseling, and provide a link to other social and supportive services. Priority for services shall be given to older individuals residing in rural areas; older individuals with greatest economic need (with particular attention to low-income older individuals, including low-income minority older individuals, older individuals with limited English proficiency, and older individuals residing in rural areas); older individuals with greatest social need (with particular attention to low-income older individuals, including low-income minority older individuals, older individuals with limited English proficiency, older individuals residing in rural areas); older individuals with severe disabilities; older individuals with limited English proficiency; older individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders with neurological and organic brain dysfunction and the caretakers of such individuals; and older individuals at risk for institutional placement.
